Keeping your fridge cool in summer
A caravan or motorhome refrigerator is different from the fridge at home, and ambient temperatures influence the workings of the fridge. Ensure your food and drinks are fresh and cold by the time you get to the caravan site with these following tips:
General tips
- Switch on the fridge at least 8 hours before departure: This gives the fridge enough time to reach the optimal cooling temperature.
- Pre-cool food and drinks before placing them in the fridge: This helps maintain the internal temperature of the fridge.
- Place only frozen food in the frozen food compartment: This helps maintain the internal temperature of the freezer compartment.
- Cover liquid products: Covered products that contain liquid (drinks, meat and certain vegetables) reduce moist build-up and help maintain consistent cooling.
- Adjust the setting to match the outside temperature: This ensures optimal cooling without overworking the fridge.
- Park your vehicle in the shade: Reducing exposure to direct sunlight helps maintain a lower fridge temperature.
- Minimise the number of door openings per day: Keeping the door closed as much as possible retains the cool air inside.
- Ensure all ventilation openings of the fridge are open and clean: Proper ventilation is crucial for efficient cooling and best performance.
- Do not completely cover the fins in the back of the fridge with products: Allowing airflow around the fins improves cooling efficiency.
- If there is ice, defrost the fins: Ice build-up can hinder the fridge’s performance.
Tips for absorption (3-way) fridges
- Level the vehicle: Ensuring your vehicle is leveled improves fridge efficiency.
- Use 230V or gas for startup and cooling: These power sources provide the best initial cooling performance.
- Install a ventilator kit in the correct position: A ventilator kit helps maintain proper airflow and cooling efficiency. Refer to the manufacturer’s user manual for correct installation.
Tip for compressor 12V fridges
- Set the frozen food compartment to the highest level: This setting ensures the coldest possible temperature for your frozen goods.
By implementing these tips, you can make the most of your RV fridge and enjoy a cold drink, even on a hot summer day.
